Influence of the Past - Maldives Arts and Crafts by Pushpitha Wijesinghe
Summary
Maldivian arts and crafts still thrive although somewhat hampered by the onset of development. Crafts that have successfully survived include the production of wooden lacquer ware, the weaving of 'thundu kunaa' or traditional reed mats and the building of 'dhonis' the traditional fishing crafts.
As with any country, the arts and crafts of the Maldives reflect its cultural heritage and showcases the skills of its crafts, people and traditions and technical knowhow handed down from generation to generation.
Amongst the country's indigenous arts and crafts, wooden lacquer ware has remained one of the most distinctive crafts. Made from 'funa' (Alexandrian laurel) which is found everywhere in the country, the wood is shaped or hollowed out into boxes and containers of various sizes for everyday use and ornamental ware and a distinctive pattern of vividly coloured bands of red, yellow and black made of a mixture of resins is painted on and buffed until a high gloss is achieved. Delicate floral patterns are engraved on them thereafter. The people of Thuhaadhoo Island in the Baa atoll are particularly skilled at this.
Weaving of 'thundu kunaa' or traditional reed mats is something that has been done by most Maldivian rural women throughout the ages although the women of Gadhdhoo island in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll seem to excel in it. They collect reeds locally known as 'haa'; from the island of Fioari which are sun dried and stained in fawn or black using natural dyes. The mats are then woven on a handloom in traditional geometrical designs and range in sizes from place mats to sleeping mats and large floor coverings.
A traditional craft that has taken on some modern techniques but has retained most of its traditional character is the building of traditional Maldivian fishing boats or 'dhonis'. Ranging from small fishing vessels to large ones used for cruising by tourists, they are still built without a plan. The form of the boat emerges as it is being built. Now imported hardwoods instead of soft coconut wood is used for the hulls and copper rivets have replaced coir rope to hold the planks together. The original square coconut frond sail is no longer in use although the triangular lateen sail is still carried on board although the dhonis now run on diesel.
Although evidence remains of the skill of Maldivian stone masons and wood carvers these crafts are not practiced today.
With the encroachment of global cultural influences keeping the local arts and crafts alive can be a challenge. However with programs to produce new designs and products using traditional methods Maldivian arts and crafts should have a long and prosperous life.
